Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Alien: Romulus (2024)

Directed by Fede Alvarez

Starring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux

Author

Story doesn’t offer much in the way of originality, we’ve seen it many times before. That said, the film shines in its aesthetic. The retro sets and cinematography are clear highlights, paying loyal homage to the look and feel of the original Alien films from the ’80s.

The ensemble cast delivers strong performances. Cailee Spaeny brings a masculine cuteness reminiscent of Brie Larson, and her character’s quiet nobility and toughness call back to Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. David Jonsson is interesting as Andy. Nice to see Ian Holm return in some form, but the digital effects are flawed, especially when he speaks.

The final alien reveal is indeed creepy. These movies still have the power to unsettle when done right.
