John Candy: I Like Me (2025)

Directed by Colin Hanks

Starring John Candy, Bill Murray, Chris Candy

Author

A love letter to John Candy. Dan Aykroyd’s opening eulogy is beautifully written and full of genuine affection. From there, the film assembles an impressive lineup of family, friends, collaborators, and admirers, all sharing deeply personal stories and memories. It’s a portrait built on love and admiration, and the sheer volume of intimate photos and archival footage gives the film a wonderfully lived-in feel.

The gorgeous Cynthia Erivo cover of Howard Jones’ “Every Time You Go Away” is emotionally resonant and perfectly placed, though it might have had even stronger impact over the final credits. The Hall & Oates version of this song, with its jazzy organ and vintage soulfulness, would have been an even better fit for Candy’s era and spirit.
