Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Marty (1955)

Directed by Delbert Mann

Starring Ernest Borgnine, Betsy Blair, Esther Minciotti, Augusta Ciolli

Author

What bothers me is that the story isn’t really about Marty changing and becoming a better person. It’s about a guy who finally gets lucky and finds a nice girl. Who cares? The only emotional moment is at the end when he turns his back on his friends and family to chase the girl he loves. But does that make it enough of a story?

And what did the subplot with the annoying aunt have to do with Marty?

Some really long, dialogue-heavy takes. Borgnine stumbles over his words a couple of times, but he pulls it off. Blair is nothing special, but I guess she fits the part.

A nice slice of life in the 50’s.
