Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Nothing But Trouble (1991)

Directed by Dan Aykroyd

Starring Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, John Candy

Author

Nothing… really happens. This is just a quirky mix of comedy and horror that is faintly Tim Burton, only it’s neither funny nor scary. Just dumb. The funhouse gags and Candy in drag are insulting attempts at humor.

A waste of true comedy talents. Perhaps the last of Chevy’s movies with his trademark humor, or at least an attempt at it, before he and his scripts sank into silliness and mediocrity. Candy is leaned on hard in two roles but wasted in both. Aykroyd is a goof. Demi Moore is very 90’s and very hot; it’s clear why she’s in this movie. The caricatured Brazilian friends offer nothing, shoehorned in as a holdover 80’s comedy requirement for overly flamboyant sidekicks. Hip hop also seems to have been a script requirement for the time.

Sloppy direction. Pacing, edits, and the story as a whole are never right. Poor Aykroyd. He’s still saying in interviews today that this is a great movie.
