Firth delivers a courageous performance of an unflattering character. Rush is good, too. But I’m not sure there is enough drama here. The king’s impediment seems almost like an obstacle to the establishment of dramatic relationships between the characters. And if a dramatic wartime speech is the climax of the movie, maybe they should have made wartime a consistently more dramatic theme, instead of just throwing it in at the end.
Authentic costumes and sets really take you back. But some odd photography choices take me out of it. Unconventional framing and wide angle distortion of people’s heads made things feel a bit sloppy.
