A pretty good implementation of sci-fi, I think. A pleasant, leisurely pace, nice effects, and few cheap scares. I’m surprised that NASA turned down consultation on the film due to what they considered to be rampant scientific inaccuracies. This one seemed more true-to-life than a lot of other sci-fi movies.
Surprisingly understated performances from some big stars. Sizemore is remarkably tame. Stamp, unfortunately, is wasted in a bit role.
The biggest problem is the thin plot. The story’s told well, but there’s just not a whole lot to it. Do these characters have a history? Have any of them really changed for the better? AMEE was cool-looking but not significant enough of a villain to make things interesting.
I’m impressed by Hoffman. A bit more story and he would have really had something here. I’m quite surprised he didn’t continue directing.
