The story’s not very interesting. As is often the case with Asian cinema, an ultimate power, force, or technique is revered by the worthless, stupid, cartoonish peasant masses. Godzilla uses the same formula.

The whole film is silly and cartoonish, like a lot of French films I have seen. Chan trying to be funny didn’t work. Seeing him break a chicken’s neck to happy, cartoonish music made me sick.

Lots of 70’s cheese as expected. Lots of idiotic camera tricks, and the exacting, almost Kubrickian cinematography didn’t add anything. That seems to be a trait of Asian cinema in general. The synthesized soundtrack wasn’t so great. Nice ending shot. Hard to believe this film was released a year after Star Wars.

Chan had it, even back then. Quite an athelete. Not an ounce of fat, like Bruce Lee (the two actually appeared together in Enter the Dragon). The pole sequence was cool. Overall though, the kung fu is a bit stunted. Stepped and choreographed. And believe it or not, it gets old after a while.
