Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Amores Perros (2000)

Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu

Starring Emilio Echevarría, Gael García Bernal, Goya Toledo, Álvaro Guerrero

Author

Polished direction, beautifully photographed, and intense throughout. Iñárritu knows what he’s doing.

The stories are deftly woven together (a technique which has apparently come to be known as “hyperlink cinema”), and it takes a bit of effort putting everything together. So much time and energy is spent on each tale that the movie seems a bit long. I wonder if things couldn’t have been tightened up a bit.

Each of the compenent stories leaves me unfulfilled. Is that Iñárritu’s message about love? That it ultimately leaves you unfulfilled?

The filmmakers claim that no dogs were hurt, that the intense fighting and injuries were simulated with editing, fake blood, and careful sedation. Given how real the scenes are, I find all that hard to believe.
