Blomkamp comes out of nowhere to give us the first real sci-fi movie in years. I can easily count on one hand the number of movies that treats alien visits in a real and dramatic way, and this is one of them.
The effects were quite fantastic (with the possible exception of aliens moving their limbs and bodies a little too smoothly). I want to know how Blomkamp came up with all these effects on a relatively small budget and without using one of the big houses like ILM or Weta.
South Africa, with its own history of racism and segregation, is a perfect setting for this story. Kudos to what seems to be a mostly local cast and crew.
Sharlto Copley is fascinating as Wikus, going from annoying goofball to dramatic, tormented hero without a hitch. The man has talent. I find this amazing:
“Star Sharlto Copley had not acted before and had no intention of pursuing an acting career. He stumbled into the leading role as Neill Blomkamp placed him on-camera during the short film.”
And this, too:
“Sharlto Copley ad-libbed all his lines.”
This is perhaps one of the things that made the dialogue so real, the drama so genuine, and the story so emotional.
Plot question: When Christopher said he would not help Wikus right away, why did Wikus then knock him unconscious? Did Wikus really think that he could fly the alien transport himself and know how to fix himself on the mother ship? Did he assume that his alien DNA would “show” him how to do everything from that point forward?
