A fantastical story with whimsical editing and wonderful special effects, though some are definitely better than others. Just not sure how I feel about the fact that 95% of what we watched was ultimately bullshit. I don’t mind that it’s a fable, but not knowing that from the beginning is deceptive.
Lee is a bit heavy-handed with the God message, using the entire story and the conversations at the end to drive his message home. The problem is that one’s preference for a story with animals and magic does not necessarily prove the existence of God. It proves the existence of an imagination.
While the adventure is exciting, the emotions conveyed in the present day scenes at the beginning and end are flat and unfulfilling. There has to be a deeper, more realistic way to show love than to show a boy and girl smiling at each other. There has to be a more interesting way to show happiness than to show a perfect house, a perfect meal, a perfect wife, and two perfect children.
Sharma is OK, though a trace of a smirk on his face ruins a lot of moments. The listener is a dope. Can’t help but feel that a star in this role would have grounded things a bit. How cool would it have been to see a humbled Bradley Cooper sitting in that chair and listening to that story? Turns out Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire were considered for the role, but in the end, Lee felt both were too famous for it. Weird.
