Totally a Scorsese film. A flashback New York story about money, drugs, and loose women. Frequent narration to the viewer, lots of quick talking, and just the right amount of industry lingo to keep it authentic.
The difference here is that this movie was an epic three hours long, and it certainly didn’t need to be. A few well-times cuts would have made things a lot snappier.
DiCaprio’s journey isn’t particularly deep, but he’s pretty good. He seemed to be channeling his
Arnie character from What’s Eating Gilbert Grape for the hilarious Quaalude Lamborghini scene. Hill’s mildly interesting as the sidekick. Newcomer Robbie plays the sexpot, something akin to Sharon Stone in Casino, and nails the New York accent. She also looks Jaime Pressly with a bit more meat on her bones. Lumley is great as Aunt Emma. Kyle Chandler is so cool.
