Probably the best of the three, but like the others, too literary. Too many strange character names and place names to keep up with. A clearer idea of what’s going on would have made things a lot more dramatic. Finally, there’s closure, and it’s as refreshing as it was in Return of the Jedi. People are talking Oscar, but I’m not sure if there’s merit in giving 1/3 of a story an award. Perhaps there should be a special Oscar for trilogies or any out-of-the-ordinary movie achievement that comes up each year.
The Braveheart-like battle sequences are cool. The battle between Sam and the spider and the charging elephants (and Logolas’ battle with one) were awesome.
Frodo is almost watchable, and the Gollum effects are amazing. The Gollum backstory would have better served one of the first two films, though.
