Interesting departure from the recently released Star Wars in that it’s dark and moody and dramatic and real. Well, more real than Star Wars. An interesting critical analysis could come out of comparing the space movies of the time, Star Wars, Alien, Close Encounters, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Action is mostly good, except for the “shock horror,” which is what I will call those cheap, insulting attempts to scare the viewer by a sudden loud noise or visual effect, usually caused by something stupid like a cat or something being dropped loudly. Visual effects are OK, sound effects are a bit cheesy and poorly edited. All in all, pretty good effects for its time. A clean print, and this movie doesn’t look very dated at all.
A young Weaver is pretty sexy.
