The whole thing feels like it came from a play, and that’s not necessarily a good thing when it’s a movie.
Very singular plot. Boy meets gangster and then meets a black woman, with some superficial neighborhood social stuff as a backdrop. Crappy editing, with weird timing and a few botched reverse shots when characters are in dialogue.
The young Capra’s not a very good actor. Why cast him for such a vital role? Brancato is a bit better. Dialogue feels very scripted, made worse by actors running over each other’s words.
I wonder how much of this is autobiographical for De Niro, given that Brancato looks and acts a lot like a young De Niro and met a girl who looks a lot like De Niro’s current wife.
