A Star Is Born (2018)

Directed by Bradley Cooper

Starring Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Sam Elliott, Andrew Dice Clay

Author

It all seems very real, almost biographical. Do you chalk this up to the script, successive refinements with each remake, or Cooper’s direction?

Cooper pulls off a great look and entirely believable musical ability. Gaga is a great actress and a true talent. Underneath all of her outrageous costumes as a musician, she really is very genuine and connected. And yes, there really is true chemistry between Cooper and Gaga, like everyone says. Elliott is perfect in a supporting role, even more amazing is how Cooper so accurately modeled his speaking voice and accent after his. Amazing to see comedians Clay and Chappelle turn in perfectly dramatic performances in small roles. And having Baldwin on SNL really makes things real.

Songs are really great. The songwriters (Lukas Nelson) should get a LOT of credit for this, with music that seems truly authentic. Concert photography is wonderful. Nice pacing, great editing overall.

Impressive direction by Cooper. What else does he have up his sleeve?
