With a retro-futuristic feel, it’s got a Watchmen kind of vibe to it. A lot of characters and places to keep straight, though. Lots of little laughs.
Pratt’s got a nice presence as the lead. As a space-faring swindler and sweet-talker, he’s the new Han Solo. His personality and sense of timing is engaging, and he’s got marvelous control of his voice. As evidenced by his performance in The Lego Movie, he’s perfect for voiceover work. Despite his obviously limited dialogue, Diesel’s Groot is cute. Having also given the Iron Giant a similar treatment, Diesel’s got the gentle giant thing down. Saldana was pretty good, but it was her blue sister Nebula who was especially creepy.
The continuous stream of special effects are amazing, and most of the make-up work was outstanding. Probably a lock for those two Oscars. We’re getting spoiled by what computers can do now.
Odd extra scene after the credits. Is Howard the Duck really going to be part of this universe?
