A movie about nothing. Awful. Theatrical long takes, lots of hoity-toity, existential, nonsensical dialogue. It’s dramatic and tongue-in-cheek at the same time, which never works. Is Russell laughing at us?
The whole thing feels like a Robert Altman film with the quirky, quick-talking characters and goofy music of a Wes Anderson movie.
Schwartzman’s presence makes it seem even more like an Anderson film. Law’s American accent is distractingly imperfect. His mouth does some serious gymnastics, with weirdly stretched lips creating weirdly stretched vowels, just to try to sound American, but it’s not quite right. Watts, however, nails it. Wahlberg is almost entertaining, but it’s really hard to squeeze comedy out of crappy dialogue.
