It reminded me a lot of Leaving Las Vegas. Both are basically the story of death from the character’s point of view, except that Jacob was being killed rather than dying. Jacob’s Ladder had a semi-pleasant resolution at the end, while Leaving Las Vegas certainly did not. Those head-shaking demons are really fucked up.
