Difficult subject matter to do comedy with, but Waititi pulls it off. It’s an interesting mix of comedy, drama, and action that works. Can say I’ve seen a movie like it.
Great performances from the kids. Archie Yates is one of the cutest, funniest fat kids that we’ve seen in a long time. Thomasin McKenzie is good, though her character plays a little more confident than she should have been. Her face is reminiscent of a young Crispin Glover. Rockwell is so fluid, isn’t he?
Waititi’s use of color in the film is notable and refreshing, though it’s weird that the colored pencils/markers Elsa was given were never used. Elsa drew in her book a picture of Jojo and his mother on bicycles. That should have been the one picture she filled with colors. A big miss that could have made things a lot more touching.
Feels like it would be a good play. Thematically, it has a Life Is Beautiful vibe but also a comedic “Springtime for Hitler” vibe. Cool that Mel Brooks saw this movie and loved it.
