Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Menace II Society (1993)

Directed by Albert Hughes, Allen Hughes

Starring Tyrin Turner, Larenz Tate, June Kyoto Lu, Toshi Toda

Author

Edging toward a higher rating because I really did start to like the protagonist by the end. More of a transformation from bad to good would have been more dramatic. Nice child on the porch connection. Very touching ending with the protagonist covering the kid. The suspense is very well-done. Nice dead narrator, like Reversal of Fortune and Sunset Boulevard. The “sensible woman enlightens the man” thing is starting to get a bit old.

Pretty well-made. Cool intro and use of video. Cool ending. Very interesting and artistic cinematography. Maybe even TOO artistic. It’s cool at first, but it gets overdone. There are a hell of a lot of dissolves, moving cameras, and weird shots (a bit of Spike Lee in there), which is all very nice, but it seems a bit excessive given that there isn’t much of a story to tell. This film had the right feel, and could have been great with more of a story. Good sound overall. Good use of music at the house party.

The film seemed very realistic. Couldn’t roll the credits without having a classic and overdone heroin-shooting scene in there.
