The Jerk (1979)

A couple of chuckles. He’s more of a moron than a jerk. Martin definitely peaked later on. Peters was good. What’s with Reiner? Seemed like an ego thing having him in the movie like that. At least he could have been funny. The late 70’s and early 80’s was a…

Mad Max (1979)

Film interpretations of the future are always interesting when watching them in the future. It’s fun to see how people thought things would turn out. Miller definitely establishes a unique style. The over-the-top characters with dainty Australian accents and personalities gives the film a confusingly goofy tone, but it’s fun…

Thriller (1979)

Yucky. Hardly a film. A collection of stills (some really interesting and others of an opera performance), dancing, laughing, and expressive voice-overs. Like a kids storybook tale on “Reading Rainbow” at times. Interesting use of music and the heartbeat (which creates suspense somehow). A bit long. The struggle to understand…

Caddyshack (1980)

Not too funny. Chevy provides the best humor, while the rest is just goofy early 80’s comedy. Chevy has some really awkward moments where his humor really doesn’t work. The drunk golfer idea is oddly familiar (Tin Cup). I don’t think the pregnancy and gopher subplots work for this movie.…

Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

A little better than Star Wars. There seems to be a greater grasp of drama in this one, making it seem more real. The best movie probably could have been made by synthesizing the three movies of the trilogy into one. Great special effects. Adding a few more exotic creatures…

The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)

Amateur acting, goofy story (which is sometimes funny). I have to admit that the Chevy-esque scene at the picnic table was pretty funny.

Oh Heavenly Dog (1980)

The dog did some amazing tricks, but the story was a bit long and slow. A bit more comedy and it might have been good.

Raging Bull (1980)

Apparently too deep for me, because I didn’t think it was that great. The beginning of a great partnership between De Niro and Pesci. A lot like Casino. Same characters (De Niro and Pesci). Same love triangle between De Niro, his beautiful wife, and Pesci.

Seems Like Old Times (1980)

Pretty funny, but not Chevy’s funniest. Good performances by Hawn and Grodin. It would have been great if the movie ended when Chevy was whistling and walking away from the camera. It felt like it should have ended there. The bit at the end was kinda dumb.

The Shining (1980)

Nice flavor, as with most of Kubrick’s work. Kubrick’s style is very interesting and very apparent when you compare The Shining with 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange. Formally, he uses extreme, bright, ultra-saturated contrasting colors or many similar drab colors. He also uses almost perfectly symmetrical square…
