The Beast (1988)

Nice simple story, nice camerawork. Nice moody music. Sounds 80’s-ish, which helps, I think. Interesting choice to make the Russians speak perfectly American English, avoiding subtitles and even accents. Obviously a ploy for us to identify and side with them for the better part of the movie. Patric is great,…

Bull Durham (1988)

Wow. What a baseball movie. It’s amazing Kevin Costner has starred in both of the two best baseball movies ever. Costner isn’t a great actor, but he gets by with his good looks and coolness. Tim Robbins is great.

Cinema Paradiso (1988)

A celebration of film. Great flavor. It kinda feels like it could have been an autobiography. Could you imagine turning something like this in with my film application? Perhaps the perfect date movie. Ranks as one of my favorite foreign films. Great photography, music, acting, characters. A lot of magical…

Die Hard (1988)

Great action movie. Simple and original. This one set the stage for Bruce Willis as a “cool” action star.

A Fish Called Wanda (1988)

Great, simple comedy. It’s just a really simple, really funny movie. More “pure” movies like this should be made. What makes this movie great is the fact that it not only has great comedy, but it also has a great story and great characters. Did you know that Archie Leach…

Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

Tragic and humbling. Displayed almost all of the classic tags of a good art film: time/history piece (WWII), temporal disjunction, picturesque settings, fantastic composition, interesting camera angles, metaphors, and a single metaphorical motif (fireflies). Compare to The English Patient or Like Water for Chocolate. Not sure if I liked the…

The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

Probably Craven’s best. Reminds me a lot of Jacob’s Ladder in that it blurs the boundary between physical and mental. Pullman is good.

Twins (1988)

Cute. With the cheap laughs and heartstrings, it’s standard 80’s comedy. Arnold’s first foray into comedy. He’s so darn goofy.

U2: Rattle and Hum (1988)

Would definitely be lower if I didn’t like U2 so much.

Die Jungfrauen Maschine (1988)

Expressionistic lighting. In fact, much of the film’s style is Expressionistic, and it’s really neat seeing that style with a contemporary American setting. Interesting seeing a foreigner getting accustomed to America through her eyes. What the hell kind of hotel was she staying in? I liked her look. Good actress.…
