Quality horror for its time, with pretty good, creepy effects. What ever happened to those long, quiet takes in horror movies? They were so effective at building suspense. I wonder if it would have been any better if Spielberg had full director privileges.

The Hunger Games (2012)

Fantasy stories generally don’t appeal to me because the drama feels fabricated, acting is over-the-top, and sets/costumes are outlandish. But this one’s not bad. Lawrence does a pretty good job in a role that launched her career. Interesting that her co-star Hutcherson hasn’t amounted to anything.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)

The whole thing is getting a bit old, with stories getting thinner and masks getting cheaper. A good time to end the series. The crying Caesar statue at the end was a bit much. I find Darden unappealing. Certainly no need for that many close-ups of his face.
