This might be Howard’s best film. His movies are usually pretty safe and sterile, but he takes some chances here. Intense subject matter, edgy characters, really great shots, creative editing choices, and some pretty gruesome scenes.
Hemsworth is pretty good, but Brühl’s performance steals the show. Nice to see him succeeding in mainstream American films. It’s good that there aren’t a lot of other stars to distract from the solid performances of the two leads, Russell Crowe’s rumored cameo as Richard Burton would have been perfect. Wilde’s accent is confident and believable.
Howard found a great story to tell, and he seems to have been quite faithful to historical events. Looking at historical photos of these characters, this is some great casting. Great 70’s feel, film stock, costume, and hair/makeup.
