Claustrophobic and gripping, with incredible suspense and tension throughout. Gentle scoring really works well to sustain the mood. Helpful, beautiful graphics are combined with great explanations by the cave divers.
You really do admire these rescuers in the end. Despite their admitted social anxieties and insecurities, they’re intelligent and well-spoken and incredibly capable. Stanton didn’t marry the girl, which makes the final moment of the film a missed opportunity and kind of weird.
The only thing that threw me a bit was the quality of the footage during reenactments. I suppose the reenactments were necessary to help visualize the story, but I kept getting distracted by thoughts of a professional camera crew swimming along with them during the dangerous rescue. Then, when I remembered they were reenactments, I was a bit turned off by the fact that there is acting going on here.
They skipped over how they saved the coach. Did they get him out the same way as the kids?
