Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

The Venture Bros.: Radiant Is the Blood of the Baboon Heart (2023)

Directed by Christopher McCulloch

Starring J.K. Simmons, Clancy Brown, Patrick Warburton

Author

Seems to be made for fans of the series, but I have never seen nor even heard of Venture Bros., so I’ve got no idea what’s going on. I had a hard time deciphering who each character was, how they related to each other, what they want, or what happening in any given scene. With this level of disengagement, it took me 5 sittings to get through the movie.

Obviously made by fans of cartoons from the 1970’s, featuring retro animation, sight gags, and music. There’s even a hint of Archer-style humor and a character who sounds suspiciously like H. Jon Benjamin. But all of these characters are over-the-top silly and weird. There’s no one grounding this story.

It feels like the movie was made by talented group of animators who share a love for the 70’s, inside jokes, niche humor, and drugs.
