Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

Directed by Lasse Hallström

Starring Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Juliette Lewis, Mary Steenburgen

An interesting portrayal of small-town life. Great story. Things are nice and simple, there and lots of great metaphors (loved the repairing and burning house metaphor), all the loose ends are tied up, and bookends. This is what I love.

Good characters, and a great cast. Everybody just seemed to charming and real. DiCaprio can act?! He sure as hell surprised me, and he did a fantastic, fantastic job. The best retard performance I’ve ever seen. Depp and Lewis (strange seeing her in a normal role like this one) did a nice job, and so did the sisters and the mother. Glover seems to like playing those gloomy characters.

Great music.
