Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Amistad (1997)

Directed by Steven Spielberg

Starring Djimon Hounsou, Matthew McConaughey, Anthony Hopkins, Morgan Freeman

Author

Spielberg picked a great story to tell, and he did a great job telling it. Perhaps it deserves a higher rating, because I can’t think of any way I could have made it better, but I just don’t know. Another in a whole bunch of emotional and powerful Black historical documentary-like fiction films, like Glory. The slave scenes on the boat were nauseatingly powerful. The super close-ups (i.e. the face and the sword-grasping at the beginning) were incredible.

Hounsou was really good. He is jacked. Another argument for acting as a natural ability rather than a learned ability. Hopkins got to play yet another US president, and he did it well. And a couple of people from Quiz Show got to work together again (playing the same kinds of characters).

Strange how the two big films of 1997 take place on a boat.
