Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Blazing Saddles (1974)

Directed by Mel Brooks

Starring Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Slim Pickens, Harvey Korman

Author

I can’t believe Warner Brothers endorsed a movie as politically incorrect as this one. Times are different, I guess. Politically incorrect is not the right way to put it. By today’s PC standards, the movie is downright wrong.

Not only was it a comedy, but it managed to provide a peek at the inner workings of Hollywood, much like Sunset Boulevard. It was a pretty sane movie until self-reflexivity came to town, and then everything went wild.

One of the first comedies of its kind. Pretty funny movie as a whole with some moments than are just damn hilarious, especially with the talented Cleavon Little. Sometimes Mel Brooks becomes silly (dumb) in his attempt to be overfunny, though. Andrew Bergman has established himself as a comedic genius, with this movie and Fletch to his credit.

The funniest line in the movie: “Well, let’s play chess.”

After a few viewings, this movie definitely gets old. Aside from the bold racial humor, there really isn’t much to this comedy.
