A story about an important and overlooked period in American history. Beautifully shot, with great effects and period costumes. A touch of light comedy perfectly sweetens the tension of the story.

Performances ring true for the period, with everyone looking and feeling authentic. Spielberg, when he’s on, creates a depth of character that most other director’s can’t reach. Hanks is wonderful, isn’t he? Always likable, always believable, always nails his beats. I wonder if he’s ever considered playing a bad guy. Could he pull it off? Or maybe he’s consciously been refusing those roles. Rylance is fantastic, a real gem.
