Disney has taken to making their movies more “cultural” in recent years. An argument can be made that it’s a noble, overdue effort, but sometimes it feels a bit forced. And for the first half of this movie, it felt that way. Scenes are driven more by how Mexican everything looks and feels and sounds than by character development. But by the end of it, I was touched. A nice plot twist sets up an emotional final few scenes.

Compared to any other Pixar film that I can think of, the story is driven more by fast-talking dialogue than visuals, and the comedy is driven more by cheap physical humor than wit and wordplay.
