Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Coda (2021)

Directed by Sian Heder

Starring Emilia Jones, Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur

A beautiful film, with magic coming from the sweet and cleanly told story, the heartfelt and authentic characters, and perfect casting.

The drama of having a voice in a deaf family is real and marvelously explored in this one. Similar drama plays out in Mr. Holland’s Opus (though perhaps in reverse). The quiet duet was an amazing creative choice.

Emilia Jones is great as an angsty teenager, and she can sing. What a find! Matlin and Kotsur are naturals with each other, playing parents in a loving family to perfection. Derbez is perfect as the weenie and whiney yet authoritative choir teacher. My only quibble is Gertie. She’s a great character and seemingly well-cast, but it sounds like she’s trying to hide some sort of accent.

Worthy of all the Oscars.
