Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)

Directed by J. Lee Thompson

Starring Roddy McDowall, Don Murray, Natalie Trundy, Hari Rhodes

Author

Poorly shot and edited, and the ape masks/prosthetics/makeup are starting to look a bit cheap. Architecture and hairstyles and sideburns give it away as a 70’s movie. I wonder if there’s ever been a period piece made that doesn’t give away the era in which it was produced through it’s production value.

And there’s a sterility to every scene and all the dialogue. What is it with the dialogue of movies from this period? It’s simplistic and idiotic, delivered with a peculiar masculine over-articulation.

Roddy’s got this down, but is he enough to anchor this movie? Montalban was the Antonio Banderas of the 70’s.
