Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Dr T and the Women (2000)

Directed by Robert Altman

Starring Richard Gere, Helen Hunt, Farrah Fawcett, Laura Dern

Author

One of the worst movies I’ve seen in a while. The first scene was a bit shocking, but the last scene was even more shocking. Vaginal bookends.

Silly and overly tragic, almost like a Bunuel film. Super-long takes (especially at the beginning) are unnecessary and boring. Lovett’s swingy, bouncing music is intrusive and inappropriate.

Gere is almost decent, but all the women give uneasy, hollow performances, all of them being unrealistically cartoonish belles and debutantes. Fawcett is pretty hot for an older lady, but I don’t think that playing a weirdo was much of a stretch for her. Based on what I’ve read, Altman likes to assemble these all-star casts and let them do their own thing, relying on their “talent” to create an interesting story. If he did more directing and less watching, we might have something here.
