Jeff's Reviews

Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Elysium (2013)

Directed by Neill Blomkamp

Starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga

Author

Blomkamp’s a visionary and a true talent with special effects. He proved that in District 9 and proved it again here with a much bigger budget.

The story’s good but runs a bit long. Why did the code messenger have to die? Was Carlyle, the original carrier of the message, prepared to die? I didn’t get that impression. The dystopian future shown as a series of dimly lit underground bunkers made of sheet metal and filled with techno music is getting a bit tired, though (Blade Runner, Strange Days, Matrix).

Like District 9, a statement on immigration and health care. Blomkamp seems to support removing borders and equal health care for all.

Damon’s pretty good. Copley pulls it off with his usual charming magnetism.
