Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Glory (1989)

Directed by Edward Zwick

Starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman

Author

The film doesn’t build up their glory enough. Morgan, as always, plays the wise, old man, and the warden from Shawshank Redemption joins him. Morgan’s MLK speech was pretty good. So was Denzel’s. Broderick is perfect. He’s come a long way from Bueller. Would have liked to see more of that mute drummer. Great character.

They should have cut directly from Denzel’s big speech to the battle at the end. They didn’t even have to show the last battle scene (a caption would have been sufficient dramatically). It was certainly intense, though. Sheesh, war was dumb back then. Some good battle scenes, though. The head blowing up was nasty. Copied the melon-chopping right out of Spartacus.

No super-close-ups, which is nice. Browns and black dominate. Good music. The shoe (building from the ground up) and bird metaphors were nice. Is that the same house as the one from Fletch Lives? Interesting ending. Cool final credit segment.
