Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Hoop Dreams (1994)

Directed by Steve James

Starring William Gates, Arthur Agee, Emma Gates, Curtis Gates

Interesting in-depth look over the period of a few years, but it drags a bit. The most amazing thing about the film is how natural and uninhibited everyone is with a camera in their face. The camera just never seemed to intrude. Great camerawork. I guess they probably shot with video since they didn’t set up lights for the interiors. Good editing. They must have had a ton of coverage. Some of the voice-over dialogue is a bit chopped up, though. Great “there’s more to life than basketball” message. I didn’t even know that they recruited players for high school basketball teams.
