Jeff's Reviews

Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Igby Goes Down (2002)

Directed by Burr Steers

Starring Kieran Culkin, Susan Sarandon, Jeff Goldblum, Claire Danes

Author

Hardly dramatic. The protagonist (Igby) was annoying, complaining about nothing and wising off at every opportunity. The characters on screen were ineffective; I begged for the chance to kick his ass myself before the credits rolled.

Trendy music, wannabe wit, horribly scripted dialogue. Unrealistic elitism doesn’t make us think kids are interesting and cool. It makes us think the script is shitty. Drug use, when not integral to the story or character development, is not cool. It?s amateurish. The mere appearance of a drag queen isn?t funny. Nor is calling a particularly irate one a ?psycho bitch.?

The greatest film accomplishment of this decade was getting all of these stars into this movie. How did Steers do it? For each one of them, it?s the least inspiring performance of their careers.
