Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)

Directed by Clint Eastwood

Starring Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, RyƓ Kase

Author

A group of soldiers are resigned to their deaths at Iwo Jima, but why should we care? Who are we rooting for?

I don’t care about what happens because none of the characters are well-developed. What makes other ensemble pieces like Saving Private Ryan and even Love, Actually work is that each of the characters in those movies is distinct and interesting. Each of them has a history and has direction. None of the characters in this movie have any of that.

A nice, desaturated visual style (perhaps influenced by Saving Private Ryan). Action sequences are pretty good, but somehow battles aren’t as exciting when one of the sides is reluctant.
