Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Like Water for Chocolate (1992)

Directed by Alfonso Arau

Starring Marco Leonardi, Lumi Cavazos, Regina Torné, Mario Iván Martínez

Author

A really well-prepared and powerful piece, very faithful to the novel it was adapted from. This movie further backs my claim that film is such a more vivid and enjoyable art form than the books they come from (unless the movie is sloppy and unrealistic). Lots of music, almost too much, but it suits the whimsical story.

It was a universal love story with the flavor of a different culture and era. I learned a lot about the similarity of Mexican culture and American culture. We are all basically the same people born into different circumstances. The food motif was very interesting and humorous, even a bit over-the-top, at times.

But what ever happened to the sweet doctor? Is it me, or does Gertrudis look like Sarah Ferguson?

Amazing that El Guapo directed this.
