Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

Directed by Peter Weir

Starring Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, James D'Arcy, Edward Woodall

Author

The story doesn’t substantiate its length. Not enough happens. We’re more wrapped up with the intricacies and vocabulary of seamanship than we are with plot.

The characters are not well-developed, couldn’t keep the names straight. Crowe doesn’t do it for me. There’s always something about him that’s a bit reclusive or unsure. He never comes across as totally confident, and that’s a shame because those are the types of roles he’s always cast for. I think a smirking John Travolta might have been an interesting choice for this role (if he can pull off the accent). Bettany is the most interesting of the bunch.
