Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Nocturnal Animals (2016)

Directed by Tom Ford

Starring Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Author

Three stories told in parallel, and there are some interesting metaphorical connections between them all. But the experience of watching the film, as cleverly layered as it is, is quite disturbing and unsettling. Tom Ford is an interesting dude.

The desert story alone would have been a good movie. A wonderfully tense set of sequences about vigilante Texas justice, reminiscent of Breakdown (1997) and No Country for Old Men (2007).

I think when all is said and done, Gyllenhaal will go down as one greatest actors of our generation. He keeps nailing it in a variety of emotionally challenging roles. Michael Shannon is fantastic in this one, perhaps his best role to date. Taylor-Johnson and the other villains are also wonderful.
