Frequency (2000)

It bothers me when I enjoy plots as implausible as this one so much. Not a bad movie, almost touching. Lots of Back to the Future-like photo and headline changes. Great make-up jobs on the aging. The old Quaid looks fantastic.

Snatch. (2000)

Ritchie is definitely making a name for himself. A lot like his Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. Similar storyline (drugs, guns, money, and the recovery of a single, valuable object), similar characters (idiotic criminals, conniving bastards, careless gamblers, and some real bad-asses), lots of playful camera tricks, and many…

Titan A.E. (2000)

Another animated movie with a young, male star right out of N’ Sync. The Tron-ish Drej are one of the cooler alien races I’ve seen. Those evil-looking but friendly bats were cool. Gune was great. Predictably annoying over-exaggerated expressions on everyone. Inconsistent animated lighting. Lots of modelling (ice fields) mixed…

Coyote Ugly (2000)

Any movie poster with beautiful women draped across it as central characters will make me very skeptical of the film itself. I expected a crappy movie about gorgeous women who are unrealistically righteous and totally unreal, and that’s exactly the kind of bullshit that I got. All of the secondary…

Chopper (2000)

An interesting story about an articulate, intelligent guy with his own brand of justice, a craving for celebrity, and a bit of an insecurity problem. But the story ended too soon. Not enough happened. A few funny moments. It gets it’s appeal by being the biography of a real person,…

What Lies Beneath (2000)

Well-made classic horror. Got a Hitchcock quality to it. Nice, leisurely long takes and very little score helps to make it scary. A few nice camera movements, and a few Kubrickian shots. Unsettlingly creepy. A good haunted house movie. The bathtub sequence was great. Ford plays a seedy fucker for…

Space Cowboys (2000)

Good story, and the old guys do a good job. They seemed very comfortabe with each other, and it looked like they were having fun. Good story, like a cross between The Right Stuff and Grumpy Old Men. Based in reality and very plausible, which makes it a lot more…

Double Impact (1991)

Same formula as the Jackie Chan movies. Very 80’s. Crummy story. Why are they both fighting for a tunnel that only Frankie gives a shit about? A few slo-mo kicks and punches, but the action is lacking. And the pathetic acting doesn’t compensate. Van Damme’s got a nice body. Too…

Retroactive (1997)

Like Groundhog Day in reverse, set in the deserts of Texas. A pleasant surprise, but the plot gets a bit convoluted towards the end. Belushi is great, a natural as a Texan. Interesting to see how resilient some people can be in different situations. I know people like him. Travis…

Little White Lies (1999)

A crap film. Bad script, bad acting. Totally uninteresting. What’s with the black and white fades? Why does it have to be set in Australia, and what’s with all the different accents? Mimi is horrible, but she’s got great tits. Morrison is pretty cool.
