Jeff's Reviews

Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)

Directed by Steven Soderbergh

Starring James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher, Laura San Giacomo

Author

Engaging and personal. The story runs a bit slow at times, with Spader’s bumbling dialogue almost bringing it all to a halt at times.

Soderbergh’s directing skills are apparent. The beginning of a successful and productive relationship with Cliff Martinez.

Although the acting is imperfect, the characters are great. Very simple, very real. I think the film would have been helped by casting a bigger star in one of the roles. Would have made a good Oscar vehicle.

Like Closer, a pretty good and somehow refreshing representation of how digusting people can really be.
