Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

Sling Blade (1996)

Directed by Billy Bob Thornton

Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Dwight Yoakam, J.T. Walsh, John Ritter

Author

Pretty good story and pretty good writing. Touching. The baby story was gross but kinda touching in a weird way. Some good comedy, but I think the film needed more of it. Karl telling his joke was pretty funny, and so was the football. I think it would have been great if the whole football scene was extended. Clumsiness is not only humorous but it makes them seem more human and easier to relate to. What happens to the girlfriend? Nice bookends.

Billy Bob is awesome (his expression, his voice, his walk, and the way he says “alright then”), but much of the other acting or writing is kind of awkward. Ritter’s another one of those guys who I on’t usually like as an actor, but he did a fabulous job in this movie. Fabulously casted. but ther are moments with all the others that just seem kind of “acted” and unnatural.

I didn’t like the music as a whole in the film. I think the score would have really benefited from a similar style or concentration on a singlular instrument and less use of vocals and singing. And I didn’t like the way the intro music continued constant and unchanging over several cuts in the beginning. Lanois’ “The Maker” over the credits is awesome.
