More of the same. Good action, amazing effects. The planetary effects are especially good, even during the closing credits. Again, Abrams overdoes it with the lens flare.

Strange story arc. There’s no consistent enemy, so the story doesn’t build to a dramatic climax. Instead, we ride a dramatic plateau for the duration of the movie.

Inside references to Trek mythology and bad jokes to establish character get old, back-and-forth dialogue between characters gets predictable. For the eye candy in a Hollywood blockbuster, Eve is surprisingly mediocre. Nice cameo from a very old Nimoy, though I don’t remember the mechanism enabling Spock to talk to his older self, so I found his appearance a bit confusing. It’s been four years since the last one, so a plot point reminder would have been nice.

I’ll be be surprised if Abrams makes another one.
