Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

The Ten Commandments (1956)

Directed by Cecil B. DeMille

Starring Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson

Author

Interesting story, and Moses is an interesting person. I wonder how much of this Old Testament story is real. Interesting that neither DeMille nor Heston were Jewish.

Heston’s performance is good. Brynner’s also pretty good, though his coloring and accent distinguish him from the rest of the Egyptians. A little overacting by everyone, and the English and proper American accents make it all a little less authentic.

Definitely epic in scale, although many the sweeping wide shots are “cheapened” by special effects. Overall, effects are pretty good for their time. I guess they couldn’t really make this movie properly until the technology was capable.
