Thoughts on every movie I've ever seen.

The Thing (1982)

Directed by John Carpenter

Starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon

Expected a cheesy horror, especially from Carpenter, with fast cuts and poor production quality, but it turned out to be quite a movie. Well-made, and by far his best work.

Good plot, many opportunities for suspense and gross-out. Very simple though, maybe a subplot would have helped thicken the stew. Seems like a remake of an older movie, a lot of talking and exposition. The little dialogue cliches don’t work. The test negative, get a blowtorch scene was funny. Why try to put out the fire when torching the monster? I don’t know about the resolution at the end.

Good characters. Babe had weird eyebrows. The same kind of shape-shifting ability (although genetic rather than physical) and implacability as the T-1000 of Terminator 2. The dog is unbelievable, awesomely trained. Its walking and staring is eerie.

Great effects, especially for modelling and no computers. A few nasty shots. Cheesy computer screen exposition, definitely an 80’s thing. The final explosion at the end was kind of weak, though. Good music (bass really works, 80’s synthesizer). I think I hear some Jaws and 2001 in there.
