Interesting backstory for the film. Shot over three years ago. It’s not great, but not as horrible as everyone’s making it out to be. Part may be my attraction to this period of Dutch history.

The story is a bit aimless at first, but the complicated love triangles eventually gain some momentum. The tulip trade is hardly relevant, though, acting as nothing more than a background to the more dramatic love stories.

Vikander has undeniable delicate and timeless beauty. Despite the limited drama afforded to his role, Waltz still has a certain gravitas. It bothered me a bit that this Dutch story featured actors with a variety of English accents. I would have at least preferred Dutch accents.

Beautifully shot, with careful attention to indoor lighting that make many of the indoor scenes look very much like Vermeer and other Dutch Golden Age paintings of the time. Wonderful job by DP Eigil Bryld. Ornate sets and costumes feel authentic.
