Spin (1995)

Very interesting. Watching this film helped me decide that I definitely don’t want a career in broadcast jounalism or TV. TV just has too much BS. It’s not in-depth, and there’s too much concern for political correctness.

Strange Days (1995)

Definitely influenced by James Cameron with all that blue lighting at night. It almost looks like Bladerunner city the way they shot it. I think that a few more day shots would have made it a bit more real, and not so surreal like Bladerunner was. Cool how they did…

Swimming with Sharks (1994)

I wonder if this film was made to release frustration or to help other young filmmakers survive the business. It might have been made by someone who got dicked around quite a bit when he got started and has a score to settle with the film industry. Spacey’s got great…

Toy Story (1995)

The story was decent. A big budget movie about toys that come alive had to be made eventually. Very simple, obviously made for kids. It’s obviously a special effects piece rather than a story piece. The animation is neat. Human action looked a bit fake. And just like Star Wars,…

Trainspotting (1996)

Reminded me a bit of Kids, except that it’s heroin instead of sex. That artistic heroin scene was pretty gross, but not as gross as the one in Pulp Fiction. A few cool scenes, especially the one where he falls into the carpet and is lost in his own little…

Twelve Monkeys (1995)

This film had the same kind of “please believe me that I am a time traveler from the future” plot that I had always thought about, and it was done very convincingly. It had more neat twists than a piece of chala. Sometimes it got a little weird, but in…

2 Days in the Valley (1996)

The story is OK, and I can see how it resembled Pulp Fiction like people are saying, but it wasn’t quite as good. I really think they should have expanded on the massage parlour scene, easliy the funniest part of the movie. That could have been a great romantic comedy…

The Big Squeeze (1996)

Silly. Nothing significant happens. The same music throughout, and while it isn’t bad, it gets annoying. Reminded me a lot of Get Shorty. Same hustler character, same kind of whimsical direction. The main character could have been really cool if they got a star actor in the role and gave…

The Birdcage (1996)

Pretty dumb. Pretty stupid story for film, which I guess could be attributed to the fact that it came from a play. Lane did a great job, especially considering the fact that he is straight in real life.

Bound (1996)

Great story, great direction (a lot of great shots), good characters and performances, with a little artsy temporal disjunction thown in for good measure. Great use of music, both in song and in score. Takes place over only 2-3 days, but still seems rushed. What if the movie was about…
